Canaccord Genuity on Wireless Equipment/Communications: Checks Indicate Improving Feb. Sales; Apple Continues to Gain Market Share

Analyst, T. Michael Walkley, said, "Our February channel checks indicated stronger sell-through trends versus January levels in the U.S. market, with sales somewhat rebounding after a slow start to 2012. During February, our checks indicated the iPhone 4S maintained and likely expanded its dominant share of the US market. Top-selling smartphones included the iPhone 4S at AT&T (NYSE: T) / Verizon (NYSE: VZ) / Sprint (NYSE: S), the Samsung Galaxy S II at AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile, the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX and the Samsung Droid Nexus 4G LTE smartphones at Verizon, and the HTC Amaze, HTC Radar and Nokia Lumia 610 at T-Mobile."

For Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL): iPhone 4S still taking market share - Our February checks indicated that iPhone sales remained strong in the U.S. and that sell-through of the iPhone led to additional market share gains versus its competitors. Further, our checks indicated strong global share gains continue with the iPhone 4S selling well in international markets including Brazil, Russia, and China.

Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM), HTC: Checks indicate ongoing market share losses - Our February checks indicated sales trends remained weak for both RIM and HTC with current smartphones from these OEMs struggling to sell versus the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S II smartphones. Our checks indicated HTC has lost significant share in the U.S. market the past several months following the iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S II launches. In addition, our checks indicated continued soft BlackBerry sales...

Qualcomm (Nasdaq QCOM): Benefits from share gains with leading OEMs, increasing mix of LTE smartphones - Our checks indicate Qualcomm has a strong position with OEMs gaining global smartphone market share such as Apple, Samsung, and Chinese OEMs. Further, meetings with smartphone OEMs and industry contacts at MWC indicated strong design wins for Qualcomm’s integrated 28nm 8960 chipset and other multi-mode LTE Snapdragon solutions. Therefore, we believe Qualcomm is well positioned to build on its leading 3G and 4G chipset market share and grow market share during F2012...
