Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS) was off to a solid start Monday and its up nearly 5 percent on the session following rumors issued over the weekend about an upcoming acquisition.
TechCrunch said that Stratasys might be looking to acquire Makerbot, which might give it immediate access to entry-level consumer-focused 3-D printing products. Currently, Stratasys' applications focus mainly on more expensive industrial applications.
Valuation on MakerBot is about $300 million, according to the WSJ. The company generated about $50 million of revs in 2012, TechCrunch noted.
Acquiring Makerbot would help Stratasys to compete with the likes of 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) and ExOne (Nasdaq: XONE). Both 3D Systems and ExOne are also higher on the session following the report.
