Apple, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) will need to focus on getting into the mid-tier smartphone market if it hopes to compete more wholly with Samsung heading into the latter part of 2013.
Barclays' Ben Reitzes, which rates Apple at Overweight with a price target of $575, notes the Apple will need to expand its iPhone market "in a big way" following Samsung's recent announcement of a mid-tier Galaxy S III and Galaxy Grand. He sees Apple debuting a lower-priced iPhone -- which he tentatively calls the "iPhone 5S" -- by the middle of 2013.
In terms of operating systems, Reitzes believes Apple needs to take it up a notch or two with iOS. He notes that integration of streaming music will be "critical" to attracting and retaining younger users.
For the higher-end smartphone market, reports out over the weekend hinted at Samsung debuting its Galaxy S IV in the middle of March, while HTC introduced the world to its latest flagship -- HTC One -- at an event today. Both are gunning to take more market share from Cupertino, CA-based Apple.
Shares are down modestly Tuesday afternoon.
