Gainers:

iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) gained 3.7 percent to 38.4. Shares in Hong Kong rose on Wednesday after China's Communist Party chief, Xi Jinping, signaled a market-favorable policy stance, aka stimulus. Talk is cheap, however, and investors await concrete efforts to boost decelerating growth in the region.

SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Prod (NYSE: XOP) gained 3.25 percent to 54. This morning Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NY: FCX) announced it was getting into the oil and gas business, and it put its money where its mouth is with a $9 billion acquisitions of McMoRan (NYSE: MMR) and Plains Exploration (NYSE: PXP). The news gave life to the entire sector, sending XOP higher in early trading.

Decliners:

Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) declined 2 percent to 45.75. With spot gold trading back under $1700, investors were in no rush to own miners. Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG) was among today’s losers, declining 2.25 percent.
