VIVUS (Nasdaq: VVUS) shares continue to be pressured Wednesday amid a note that its obesity pill may have fad-like qualities.
Cowen's Simos Simeonidis said today that the latest data out of IMS and Wolters Kluwer suggest that Qsymia, as well as other weight-loss pill makers like Arena Pharma (Nasdaq: ARNA) and Orexigen (Nasdaq: OREX), might be aiming for a niche" market.
The latest data from IMS Qsymia's fifth week of availability show new prescriptions up 6 percent to 1,729, from 1,626 new prescriptions the prior week. Wolters Kluwer says new prescriptions rose 11 percent to 2,141.
Simeonidis noted that it was still premature to gain any real substance from the two data sets. Overall, the trend seems to point to a slowdown.
While markets were closed Tuesday, peer Allergan (NYSE: AGN) said it "is exploring strategic options for maximizing the value of its obesity intervention business, including among other things, a potential sale of that business unit. To the extent Allergan elects to pursue such a strategic option, the company intends to offset any potential earnings dilution related to the transaction."
VIVUS is down about 14 percent on the session, while Arena and Orexigen are also in negative territory.
