Accelerating IPO Activity, Investor Confidence May Push Goldman Sachs (GS) to Q3 Beat

October 15, 2012 1:35 PM EDT
Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) shares are higher heading into the firm's third-quarter 2012 earnings report, expected out before the market opens Tuesday.

Currently, the Street consensus calls for revs of $7.3 billion and EPS of $2.12. Earnings would be a 19 percent pop from the second quarter and vast improvement from a loss of 84 cents per share in the same period last year.

There's some good momentum in the financials into Goldman's numbers. Last Friday, peer JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) topped views, while Citigroup (NYSE: C) bested expectations on Monday. Many will look out for investment banking performance, which has been up-and-down over the last several quarters. Notably, IPO activity has picked up as markets have shored-up and are trading near 5-year highs. For a list of recent IPOs, click here.

Goldman has been trading solid this year, shares rising nearly 40 percent so far. The stock rose 19 percent just in the three months ended September 30, 2012.

According to Streetinsider's Ratings Insider, six analysts have a Buy rating on Goldman, 12 are at Hold, and three maintain a Sell-equivalent call.

The Street's price target is $129, ranging from $107 to $170. Over the last year, Goldman shares have traded within a range of $86.90 to $128.72.

With Goldman closing up nine of the last 12 sessions, the stock is well above 20-, 50-, and 200-day SMAs. Shares are up 2.8 percent Monday.
