Shares of VIVUS Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) are fractionally lower Monday despite data showing that recently launched obesity drug Qsymia is posting strong sales momentum.
In its third week, Qsymia prescriptions rose 150 percent sequentially, according to Bloomberg Industries which cited data from Source Healthcare Analytics. 53 percent of Qsymia prescriptions were paid for by commercial insurers, versus 36 percent in week two.
"While it often takes several weeks for data to reflect true demand, payors and patients appear to be adopting Qsymia", the analyst said.
Qsymia has the first-mover advantage in the space but Arena Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ: ARNA) Belviq is expected to hit in the fourth quarter.
