Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) is higher Monday following chatter that it and Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) might be in talks for Amazon to acquire TI's smartphone and tablet OMAP chip business.
Nothing official has been announced by either firm and the original headline was from Israeli news source calcalist.co.il.
Sources said talks are "advanced" and a deal might be worth "billions of dollars."
Amazon might be looking for greater control over chip manufacturing for devices like its Kindle reader and tablet line. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Samsung already manufacturer most of their chips in-house, which is putting pressure on the likes of TI, Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA) and others.
On watch will be Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), which utilizes TI chips in its NOOK Color tablet.
TI is up about 1.8 percent while Amazon is also higher early.
