MetroPCS (PCS) Rips on Potential Deal with Deutsche Telekom

October 2, 2012 10:40 AM EDT
MetroPCS Communications (NYSE: PCS) shares are showing some life again today following more M&A chatter, this time with Deutsche Telekom.

Reports out earlier have DT looking to make a deal with PCS to join its T-Mobile USA unit. Streetinsider.com hinted at a possible deal last week, when T-Mobile and Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) entered a 2.4 billion tower deal.

DT executives will meet in Bonn, Germany, tomorrow to approve a transaction, noted Bloomberg this morning.

T-Mobile is the fourth-largest wireless provider in the U.S., with some 33.2 million subs as of June. AT&T (NYSE: T) tried, and failed, to takeover T-Mobile last year in a deal valued at $39 billion.

Notably, Sprint (NYSE: S) is showing some weakness today following reports last might that it might be in talks to acquire PCS. Though PCS boasts just 9.3 million subs, the number would better position Sprint in the prepaid market as well as gain broader network access.

PCS shares are 18.4 percent higher in midmorning trading.
