Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on LeapFrog Enterprises (NYSE: LF): Ribbit.
Yesterday, shares of interactive-toy maker LeapFrog fell after Toys R Us said it will launch its own tablet designed for children and sold exclusively at its own stores. The tablet, dubbed the Tabeo, will sell for $149.99 and come with child-friendly apps along with integrated parental controls. The news is a blow to LeapFrog who already has a tablet aimed at children called LeapPad. LeapFrog is down nearly 20% over the past few days amidst a slew of new product announcements that could cit into Leap’s market share. New tablets from Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) along with the prospect of an iPad mini from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) “underscores that tablet companies are increasingly encroaching on the space,” says one Wall Street analyst. While there is an increase in competitive products, it should be noted that the LeapPad Explorer tablet is still the cheapest of the bunch at $99, although product placement and marketing initiatives at Toys R Us could divert attention to the new Tabeo offering.
Shares of LF fell 9% yesterday, and are trading slightly above the flat line this morning.
