Barclays on U.S. Software: A New Era of Datacenter is Emerging

Analyst, Raimo Lenschow, said, "We believe we are at the beginning of the next phase of the evolution of the datacenter. Software defined datacenters not only leverage virtual server infrastructure, but also virtual network and storage. In our view, this is a natural progression and, while still in early stages, will dominate industry discussions in the years to come. We see software companies like VMware (NYSE: VMW) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) as potential beneficiaries, although this theme will likely impact many hardware vendors."

Highlights points include: 1) VMware a leader in forming the Software Defined Datacenter vision; 2) Open source a leading force - OpenStack is gaining momentum and we expect fully supported enterprise-class versions of the software from the likes of Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) or Rackspace (NYSE: RAX) in the coming quarters.

Other companies that might see positive benefits from these trends include: Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and EMC (NYSE: EMC). However, there are challenges to low-tech hardware companies like Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) and H-P (NYSE: HPQ).
