One company not liking the Navistar (NYSE: NAV) news today is Westport Innovations (Nasdaq: WPRT).
Navistar has been hit in the past from butting heads with regulators over emissions standards on its diesel offerings. Today's news has the company aiming to unveil a new engine geared toward meeting 2010 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions regulations.
For Westport, this means that it's alternative fuel offerings might be met with some resistance as Navistar engines continue to be the de facto standard in the trucking and shipping segment.
There's still some time left for Westport to convince companies to covert over to nat gas-powered engines; Navistar's new ICT+ engines won't be available until early 2013.
Of note, Navistar has also been an acquisition target as of late, with stock prices depressed 50 percent from the same period last year. However, the recent adoption of a shareholder rights plan as well as today's news might put an end to that chatter.
Shares of Navistar are up 2.5 percent in early trading while Westport is down 2.3 percent.
