Intel (INTC) Gets the 'Pulse' of Technology with Latest Start-Up Acquisition

July 2, 2012 11:15 AM EDT
Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) is taking the business of identifying people to heart...literally.

According to Israeli news source Globes, Intel has acquired start-up IDesia Biometrics, which specializes on developing technology that allows mobile devices to recognize users via their heart rhythm.

Specific terms of the deal were not immediately available, only the transaction would be for "several million dollars."

IDesia technology "uses an electrical signal generated by the heartbeat to create an 'electro biodynamic signature' unique to every individual, establishing a biometric identity that cannot be forged," according to Globes. Users will need to touch a small metal sensor to identify the EBS.

The Intel unit making the acquisition is the oddly-specific Perceptual Computing Division (PCD).

Currently, no government agencies recognize biometric heart rhythms as unique identifiers, making private customers the sole market for this technology.

Shares of Intel are slightly lower Monday morning.
