RBC analyst Doug Freedman made some quick observations on Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) decision to buy 1700 patents and patent applications from InterDigital (Nasdaq: IDCC) for $375 million in cash.
The agreement is related to 3G, LTE, and 802.11, he notes.
For Intel, the acquisition has a two-fold meaning: 1) supports Intel's growth ambitions in the mobile segment; and 2) strengthens IP portfolio and position to complete in indemnity cases.
