Ireland to Take Center Stage As EU Woes Continue

May 24, 2012 12:50 PM EDT
With everyone in Europe focusing on the upcoming election in Greece, another potential saboteur lays in wait for beleaguered European officials – the Irish. Today Irish minister Brian Hayes said the result of the referendum on Europe's fiscal treaty is "very tight". The Irish will be voting for or against the treaty on May 31st, and while the odds are for a 'yes vote', the outcome is far from certain. Voters in Ireland have rejected European treaties twice.

Analysts at Danske Bank A/S said in a note that the 'yes side' is feeling comfortable, but added it’s too soon to declare victory. "Given that undecided voters still make up such a large amount of the vote, the government cannot be complacent," the firm said.
