Notable ETF Movers of the Day 05/09: (VXX) (UNG) Higher; (XLF) (FXI) Lower

Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.58 percent to $17.39. The CBOE VIX is up 3.5 percent today as markets work to digest more news out of Spain that its banks are in more trouble as well as the euro zone mulling the delay of a €5.2 billion payment to Greece following recent elections.

    Sunday, newly elected Greek officials mulled the idea of renegotiating the bailout plan.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.42 percent to $17.75. Some traders are looking at the slowing production from record levels and jump in demand as positive signs. Tuesday, the EIA raised its nat gas consumption estimates for 2012, now seeing overall usage up 5.1 percent from 2011.

    For Thursday's EIA data, initial views call for gains of 25 to 52 billion cubic feet.
Receders
  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.23 percent to $14.90. Financials taking some heat amid news of Spain prepping a possible nationalization of its Bankia Group. Citi (NYSE: C) is leading the dip, down about 3 percent on the session.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.62 percent to $35.84. With Greek worries, China shares dipping as political concerns weigh. According to reports, China's Communist Party may delay its five-yearly congress with the current leadership changeover still taking place.

    The Shanghai Composite fell 1.7 percent Wednesday.
