Did Green Mountain's (GMCR) Stiller Liquidate His Krispy Kreme (KKD) Stake Due to Margin Calls?

May 8, 2012 4:39 PM EDT
Shares of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) got kreamed Tuesday. Shares closed down 9 percent although there was no significant news from the company. The weakness appears to be related to speculation of a share liquidation from a major shareholder due to margin calls.

This morning it was reported that there was a 9.5 million share block trade in Krispy Kreme. The trade never printed and no additional information was revealed.

Meanwhile, over at Green Mountain Coffee (Nasdaq: GMCR) it was reported that CEO Robert Stiller filed 144 paperwork to sell 5,000,000 shares after a margin call. Interestingly, Stiller is a second largest shareholder Krispy Kreme. Hmmm.

This has traders buzzing that Stiller also got a margin call on his Krispy Kreme stock and was forced to sell. He last disclosed owning 8,060,000 shares of KKD, or 11.84%.

The good news for Krispy Kreme investors is shares of Green Mountain Coffee jumped 8 percent today on the CEO stock sale disclosure as some believe the exaggerated sell-off could have been because of the sales.

If he is done selling this will remove an overhang.
