Top Pops and Drops in Volatility of the Day 04/19: (REE) (ABT) (P) Up; (CLWR) (HGSI) (BAC) Down

The following is a list of changes in implied volatility using the prior sessions calculated closing price. Implied volatility is a metric that is constantly changing based on ongoing market conditions, so this is just a brief, intra-day snapshot.

Rapid increases and decreases in implied volatility can drastically alter the value of a stock option, which can have a huge impact on profits...or losses

Gainers:
  • Rare Element Resources (AMEX: REE) up 9.5 percent. Could be moving as Director Greg McKelvey sold about 1,000 common at $5.81. Shares are 0.7 percent lower on the session.

  • Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) up 9.1 percent. Earlier, Abbott (NYSE: ABT) and Enanta Pharmaceuticals announced data from "Co-Pilot," an interferon-free, Phase 2 study of Abbott's direct-acting antiviral medicines for the treatment of hepatitis C (HCV) that found that more than 90 percent of patients new to HCV treatment achieved sustained viral response through 12 weeks (SVR12).

    Abbott shares are off about 1.8 percent.

  • Pandora Media, Inc. (NYSE: P) up 28.5 percent. DISH (Nsadaq: DISH) introduced Pandora (NYSE: P) for the DISH Hopper" Whole-Home HD DVR system. Pandora is up 6.3 percent.

  • RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) up 8.9 percent. RadioShack might be getting some attention from recent Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) news of store closings. In addition, wireless carriers like Verizon (NYSE: VZ), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Sprint (NYSE: S) are reporting earnings soon (Verizon reported today). RadioShack will report EPS next Tuesday.
Losers:
  • Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) down 12.6 percent. BofA reported first-quarter earnings earlier. Shares are off 0.6 percent Thursday.

  • Clearwire Corp. (Nasdaq: CLWR) down 20.8 percent. Clearwire dipping following Verizon's announcement of spectrum sales yesterday. Shares are off about 3.7 percent.

  • Human Genome Sciences (Nasdaq: HGSI) down 51.9 percent. Human Genome lower after getting a $13 per share bid from Glaxo (NYSE: GSK). It since dismissed the bid, saying the offer "does not reflect the value inherent in HGS." Shares nearly doubled Thursday.

  • Gilead Sciences (Nasdaq: GILD) down 34.5 percent. Gilead reported interim data from a Phase 2 trial (ATOMIC) examining a 12-week course of treatment with the once-daily nucleotide GS-7977 plus pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) in treatment-naïve patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Shares are about 12 percent better on the session.
