Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/28: (VXX) (UUP) Higher; (USO) (SPY) Lower

Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short Term Fund (NYSE: VXX) up 5.81 percent to $18.19. Volatility is increased in the markets following economic data and outlooks in the U.S. and Europe. Reports today have one Citigroup analyst seeing Spain needing a bailout before the end of 2012, though it might be avoidable upon stronger and more stringent fiscal policy.

    In Europe, the ECB said private-sector loan growth slowed from 1.1 percent in January to 0.7 percent last month.

    U.S. durable orders for February came in at 2.2 percent, compared with views calling for a 2.8 percent gain. The number reversed a revised narrower 3.6 percent drop in January.

  • PowerShares DB USD Index Bullis (NYSE: UUP) up 0.14 percent to $21.99. The U.S. dollar moving higher as investors pull out of the risk trade Wednesday on economic data and as some collect profits. The euro is down nearly 0.2 percent to $1.3292.

  • United States Oil Fund (NYSE: USO) down 2.11 percent to $39.85. EIA data showed an increase in crude stores of 7.1 million barrels, compared with views calling for just a 2.2 million barrel increase. Crude May contracts are $2.42 lower to $104.91 per barrel on the Comex.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) down 0.86 percent to $139.95. The S&P 500 and others are off today as markets pullback following a multi-session run. Overall, the Dow is down 96 points, Nasdaq is off 25, and the S&P is about 12 points lower Wednesday.
