Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on Atmel (Nasdaq: ATML): Feeling It.
Canaccord Genuity Technology Analyst Bobby Burleson believes Atmel's license from Carclo's Conductive Inkjet Technology (CIT) division should give the company a competitive technological edge in developing touch solutions for devices with medium to large screens (superphones, tablets, and ultrabooks). By selling controllers into modules with higher production yields versus those using ITO (Indium Tin Oxide), Atmel may be able to slow ASP pressure and win disproportionate share in emerging high-volume touch categories including tablets and ultrabooks running Win8 (Nasdaq: MSFT). While Burleson believes Atmel and CIT are in the early stages of ramping production, volumes are likely to be meaningful in 2012 (tens of millions of units), increasing substantially in 2013. At this point, he is unsure whether Atmel intends to sell complete modules, taking a much higher ASP (probably with lower overall gross margins), or benefit from being the only touch supplier into these innovative modules. Burleson’s Q1 and F12 estimates and bullish outlook for shares of Atmel remain unchanged; however, he is raising his target price on the stock.
