Needham & Company Digital Lifestyle: Our Quarterly Report on the Smartphone Industry: iPhone 4S Derails the Android Juggernaut in the December Quarter
Analyst, Charlie Wolf, said, "Smartphone shipments increased 48.8% to 149 million units, a pace that was modestly faster than September...The major event in the quarter was the launch of iPhone 4S in October. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) sold a record 37 million iPhones in the quarter, increasing its worldwide share to 23.8% from 15.0% in September. The share gains were more dramatic in individual regions. In the U.S., the iPhone’s market share nearly doubled from 21.3% to 41.7%...Reflecting the surge in iPhone 4S sales, a three-year-long string of Android’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) market share gains reversed in December. Android’s market share fell to 50.9% from 52.5% in September. The reversals were especially pronounced in postpaid regions. Android’s share in the U.S., for
example, fell 15 percentage points from 65.0% to 50.0%."
Other highlighted points include: 1) The December quarter did not shape up as the moment of truth for Windows Phone (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK), as we had projected..The ultimate verdict on the success of the Microsoft-Nokia partnership must await a more aggressive rollout of Lumia phones in the U.S., China and other regions, in our view.; 2) BlackBerry continued to sink in the U.S. market, although it held up relatively well in international markets. Nonetheless, we believe it’s possible that Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) may never escape irrelevancy in this market....we think it’s an open question whether BlackBerry 10 will make a difference even when it does (launch).
