Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/22: (VXX) (UUP) Higher; (FXI) (USO) (SPY) Lower

Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short Term Fund (NYSE: VXX) up 3.98 percent to $19.09. The CBOE VIX is up about 8 percent Thursday following stronger initial jobless claims data which is being offset from recent China manufacturing data.

    According to the HSBC, its purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell from 49.6 percent in January, to 48.1 in February. Numbers below 50 indicate contraction in the economy.

    For the U.S., initial claims last week came in at 348K, from 535K the prior week and economists view calling for 355K. Leading indicators at 0.7 percent also outpaced views by 0.1 point.

  • PowerShares DB USD Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.14 percent to $22.14. The U.S. dollar making some gains on stronger data leading to less likelihood of further quantitative easing and as the euro-area PMI fell from 49.3 to 48.7 in March, according to Markit Economics.
Receders
  • United States Oil Fund (NYSE: USO) down 1.52 percent to $40.04. Crude falling on China data as well as speculation that reserves may be released as tensions in Iran continue to remain strong. May contracts are $2.18 lower to $105.09 per barrel on the Comex.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.66 percent to $36.80. As mentioned above, China shares falling on economic data, leading to expectations of a slower recovery.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 0.78 percent to $139.11. U.S. markets lower on data Thursday. The Dow is down 77, Nasdaq off about 16, and S&P 500 down 11 points Thursday.
