Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/20: (XLF) (XRT) Higher; (FXI) (USO) (XHB) Lower
Gainers
- SPDR Select Sector Fund - Financial (NYSE: XLF) up 0.25 percent to $15.84. The financials being led by Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC), which is up about 3.2 percent following a late sell-off Monday on an unfounded rumor the bank is mulling another equity raise. Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) is notably 2.3 percent better on the session as well, following late reports Monday it was commencing planned headcount reductions.
- SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSE: XRT) up 0.26 percent to $61.24. Retailers moving higher, led by Chico FAS (NYSE: CHS), following Redbook Research reporting a 0.4 percent increase in national chain store sales for the first three weeks of March. The number was in-line with views. Chicos is up 3 percent on the session.
- iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 2.29 percent to $37.10. China said its raising fuel prices amid increasing crude costs. Additionally, warnings from BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto executives hinted at a slowing Chinese economy in the near-term.
- United States Oil Fund (NYSE: USO) down 1.84 percent to $40.53. Crude prices fell on word that Saudi Arabia said it would pump more in order to keep markets "well-stocked," and avoid a spike in prices. The news comes amid a continued standoff between Iran and the U.S. and EU over sanctions on its nuclear program.
- SPDR Series Trust SPDR Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) down 1.72 percent to $21.16. Home builders lower as Commerce Department data showed housing starts of 698,000 in February, down from a revised higher 706,000 in January. Building permits, however, came in above expectations. M.D.C. Holdings (NYSE: MDC) leading the group lower, off 2.9 percent on the session.
