Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM): One more road to cross.
China’s antitrust regulators are taking another look at Google’s bid for Motorola Mobility Holdings, potentially pushing back the planned $12.5-billion acquisition. The deal has already been cleared by the U.S. Justice Department as well as regulators in the European Union with China being the final hurdle to overcome before completing the deal. China’s Anti-Monopoly Bureau said, “Motorola Mobility and Google can provide no assurance as to whether or when the transaction will receive clearance,” although the two still expect the deal to close by the end of June. Separately, Barron’s said over the weekend that future Samsung smartphones bight be powered by Research In Motion’s BlackBerry 10 operating system due to licensing concerns surrounding the Motorola/Google merger. Rumours around Wall Street apparently suggested that Samsung would be investing $1.5 billion in RIM, and then license its next generation operating system for upcoming smartphones. That said, one Wall Street analyst said that he believes it is highly unlikely RIM will receive an investment from Samsung, but did not rule out the use of the operating system at some point in the future.
