UPDATE: Staples (SPLS) Tops Q4 EPS by 1c; Issues FY12 Sales, EPS Growth Outlook w/ 53rd Week

Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) reported Q4 EPS of $0.41, $0.01 better than the analyst estimate of $0.40. Revenue rose 1% to $6.46 billion versus the consensus estimate of $6.45 billion.

Including the impact of the 53rd week in fiscal 2012, the company expects full year sales to increase in the low single-digits compared to the prior year, and full year diluted earnings per share to increase in the high single-digits versus adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.37 achieved in 2011.

Staples generated operating cash flow of $1.6 billion and invested $384 million in capital expenditures in 2011, resulting in free cash flow of $1.2 billion for the full year.

The repurchased 37 million shares for $605 million and returned $278 million to shareholders through cash dividends in 2011.

At the end of the year, the company had $2.5 billion in liquidity, including $1.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents.

North American Delivery sales for the fourth quarter of 2011 were $2.5 billion, an increase of two percent. North American Retail sales for the fourth quarter of 2011 were $2.6 billion, an increase of three percent.

Sales in International Operations for the fourth quarter were $1.3 billion, a decrease of five percent in U.S. dollars and a decrease of four percent on a local currency basis compared to the fourth quarter of 2010.
