Notable ETF Movers of the Day 02/28: (SMH) (TAN) (XRT) Higher; (UNG) (UUP) Lower

  • Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH) up 1.80 percent to $35.16. Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq: BRCM) making a move higher after closing slightly lower Monday on word it is subject of an SEC investigation. For more color on that, click here. Otherwise, the sector is gaining on consumer confidence and the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.

  • Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSE: TAN) up 2.17 percent to $30.59. Solars getting a boost from JA Solar (Nasdaq: JASO) which earlier announced better-than-expected preliminary fourth-quarter shipments of 390-MW to 410-MW, topping the company's previous guidance of 310-MW to 330-MW.

    JA also lifted its fiscal 2012 shipment guidance from from about 1.6GW to 1.68-GW to 1.7-GW.

  • SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSE: XRT) up 1.21 percent to $59.41. Lots of winners in the sector today. Priceline (Nasdaq: PCLN), Office Depot (NYSE: ODP), and AutoZone (NYSE: AZO) helping out through stronger earnings reports. Office Depot is gaining the most, up 15.7 percent on the session.

  • United States Natural Gas Fund (NYSE: UNG) down 2.51 percent to $20.19. Nat gas April contracts are $.060 lower to $2.543 per mmBtu on the Comex as mild weather continues to hang around. According to Reuters, draws from stockpiles are down about 510 billion cubic feet from the same period last year. Analysts expect nat gas stockpiles to end the season up 2.215 trillion cubic feet, an all-time high.

  • PowerShares DB USD Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.40 percent to $21.79. The U.S. dollar is lower against the euro on an upcoming cash infusion from the European Cental Bank, amid S&P cutting its investment rating on Greece to "selective default."
