Shares of Safeway (NYSE: SWY) are down about 0.6 percent Wednesday afternoon as an analyst at Morgan Stanley named the stock a "Short Research Tactical Idea" earlier. The downside comes as the broader stock market is up about 1 percent.
The firm warned investors Safeway shares could be "vulnerable for a pullback" as volumes fell during the fourth quarter of 2011. Morgan Stanley believes Safeway could post an earnings miss when the company reports on Thursday, February 23rd.
A consensus of analysts expects Safeway to report quarterly earnings of 64 cents per share on sales of $13.46 billion.
