Amazon (AMZN) Reports 58% Plunge in Q4 Profit; Guidance Looks Light

Shares of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) are currently down about 8 percent in Tuesday's after-hours trading session following a beat on the bottom line but a wide miss on the top line. Traders are also weighing sales guidance which came in at the low end of analyst's range.
Fourth-quarter sales surged 35 percent from $12.95 billion in the same quarter last year to $17.43 billion. The Street was expecting sales of $18.2 billion. While sales to the online retailer's North American segment surged 37 percent year over year to $9.9 billion, International sales were up 31 percent to $7.53 billion.
Net income tumbled from $416 million in the year-ago quarter to $177 million, a 58 percent decline. On a per-share basis, earnings totaled 38 cents, down from earnings of 91 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2010. Analysts were looking for EPS of just 19 cents.
During the nine-week holiday period ending December 31, 2011, Kindle unit sales, including both the Kindle Fire and e-reader devices, increased 177% over the same period last year.
Amazon is target first-quarter revenue of $12-$13.4 billion, what would represent growth of 22 and 36 percent, respectively, over the first quarter of 2011. The Street is currently looking for quarterly sales of $13.41 billion. The company is expecting a quarterly loss of $200 million to a gain of $100 million, implying a decline of 162 percent to 69 percent.
