UBS on U.S. Specialty Retail: Stick With Quality Comp/Margin Stories in '12

Analyst, Roxanne Meyer, said, "2011 Review: Investors rewarded companies and stocks that delivered on both comp and margin growth, in line with our thesis, and tough to achieve in a year of higher sourcing costs and a choppy spending environment. Top performers in 2011 were Buy-rated Ross Stores (Nasdaq: ROST) (+50%), TJX Cos (NYSE: TJX) (+45%), Limited (NYSE: LTD) (+31%) and Express (Nasdaq: EXPR) (+6%), while the group overall fell 8%, underperforming the S&P 500 (flat) and the SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) (+9%)."

"Off-price leads in our top picks for ‘12: TJX, ROST, LTD, EXPR, Ann Inc (NYSE: ANN): We foresee the winners of 2011 carrying the torch in 2012. Recent comp outperformance at offprice occurred even as consumers had little reason to leave the mall, reflecting product strength and value, which we see sticking. Valuation rolled to P/E multiples on ‘13E; raised estimates and PTs on TJX, ROST, LTD."
