Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/26: (SMH) (TAN) (IYR) Higher; (UNG) (KBE) (UUP) Lower
Gainers
- Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH) up 0.24 percent to $33.98. Chips are still riding the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) wave Thursday, with the only real black sheep of the bunch being Intel (Nasdaq: INTC). Earlier in the session, Intel said it would acquire a significant number of patents and next generation video codec software from RealNetworks, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK) in a deal valued at $20 million.
Notably, the deal allows RealNetworks to retain certain rights to continue to use the patents in current and future products.
- Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 3.06 percent to $3.03. Solars moving higher on news that Germany may move to cut solar subsidies quicker than planned, but still keep the corridor for new PV installations between 2.5- to 3.5-gigawatts (GW) per year, despite cries to cut the corridor to 1-GW per year.
- iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) up 0.80 percent to $60.76. The ETF is being led higher by Equity Residential (NYSE: EQR), which was upgraded at Barclays from Equalweight to Overweight earlier. Otherwise, new home sales fell more than expected in December, from a gain reported the prior month.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 5.90 percent to $5.58. Nat gas reeling despite better than expected inventory data, as supplies still remain highly above average. According to the EIA, nat gas stockpiles fell 192 billion cubic feet to $3.098 trillion cubic feet. Economists were looking for a decline of 171 bcf to 175 bcf. Inventories are still 21.4 percent above the five-year storage average and 20.7 percent better than last years level at this time.
- SPDR S&P Bank ETF (NYSE: KBE) down 2.30 percent to $21.21. Associated Banc-Corp (Nasdaq: ASBC) was downgraded by Baird to Neutral earlier, setting the tone for regional financials today. Overall, banks are keeping eyes on Greece, as costs of borrowing have risen with any debt resolution still in limbo.
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.27 percent to $22.11. The dollar seeing some pressure today following extension of low rates by the Fed Wednesday, moving its view from mid-2013 now to the end of 2014. The extended low rates will add pressure to the dollar, which could devalue compared with other major currencies.
