The following is a brief summary of events moving markets today:
- SOPA is an allegory for 'blackout': Many well-known websites "went black" to protest SOPA and PIPA today. Homepages from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Wikipedia, Reddit, craigslist, Archive.org, and so on. The best response to Wikipedia was in the Washington Post, which posted advice from 'TimeToTag' which suggested alternatives to Wikipedia as "Brittanica or the crowd-sourced infoplease.com and answers.com." Notice how "library" is curiously missing from the list. Hmmm...
- Is that gold jingling in those sacks?: Goldman Sachs reported mixed results for its fourth quarter. Revenue was $6.05 and earnings were $1.84 per share, compared with consensus views calling for revs of $6.54 billion and earnings of $1.24 per share. For more color on the quarter, click here.
- eBay eblows it up: E-Commerce giant eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) -- the first of the large Internet stocks -- reported fourth-quarter numbers Wednesday, and issued a beat on the top and bottom lines. Earnings for eBay were 60 cents per share on revenue of $3.38 billion, topping views calling for earnings of 57 cents per share and revenue of $3.32 billion. - Down goes the prices!: Producer prices fell 0.1 percent in December, missing views for a 0.1 percent gain. Both food and energy led the drop for the month, with veggie prices 11 percent lower and gasoline prices off 2.3 percent. For more color, click here.
