Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/13: (VXX) (EWJ) (XRT) Higher; (XLF) (FXE) (UNG) Lower

January 13, 2012 11:58 AM EST
Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.03 percent to $31.59. Markets are more volatile Friday, following word that S&P may have downgraded France and Austria. Further announcements and clarification will be made this afternoon, at 3pm EST. The CBOE VIX is 5.7 percent higher on the session, according to latest checks.

  • iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) up 0.16 percent to $9.15. Though only modestly higher, stocks in Japan are getting some positive sentiment on lower borrowing costs for Span and Italy. Though all Asian markets saw a pop on the news, the aforementioned ratings adjustments by S&P might have investors singing a different tune come Monday (no holiday in Asia).

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.44 percent to $53.07. The ETF is being led by Urban Outfitters (Nasdaq: URBN), which is seeing a rebound after being clipped on the departure of its CEO earlier in the week. Urban is up about 2 percent Friday.
Receders
  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.08 percent to $13.77. JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) is driving the move today, following its fourth-quarter earnings announcement ahead of the bell this morning. Shares of JPMorgan are down about 3.6 percent Friday. Being the frontrunner in earnings season, investors might be looking at things like capital ratios and trading results for indications as to how others might perform.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) down 1.08 percent to $126.38. The euro is lower following reports of potential rating changes by the S&P to several eurozone members. The euro is down 0.21 to $1.2690 at last check.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.69 percent to $5.80. Amid milder weather for much of 2012, nat gas stockpiles have continued to grow. Although stores fell this week more than expected, they were far below averages over the last several years. Further, even if demand increased, there's already two-months of viable nat gas weather that has passed, leaving about two more months -- through March, at least -- left. Hopefully is a hot summer so some of the extra supply can be used for generating energy, reducing storage issues which are currently creeping up.
