Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/10: (XLF) (FXI) (TAN) Higher; (VXX) (UNG) (UUP) Lower

Gainers
  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 1.86 percent to $13.72. Financials making a nice bounce Tuesday, following numbers from Alcoa (NYSE: AA) on Monday, as well as trade data out of Chine. Though quarterly results were mixed for Alcoa, the Company said it expects 7 percent growth in aluminum demand in 2012, ahead of the 6.5 percent rate required to meet the Company’s forecast of a doubling in global aluminum demand between 2010 and 2020.

    Further, data from China had export growth of 13.4 percent in December, though import growth was only at 11.8 percent.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) up 2.90 percent to $36.96. China's trade surplus widened to $16.52 billion in December, compared with expectations calling for $7.8 billion.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 3.45 percent to $2.70. Solars continuing to bounce Tuesday, with the CES show in Las Vegas going on. The move is being led by Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL), which is over 6 percent better on the session.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 3.42 percent to $30.23. The CBOE VIX is lower Tuesday, as investors turn focus on the kick-off to earnings season with Alcoa's (NYSE: AA) report Monday. Though quarterly results were mixed for Alcoa, the Company said it expects 7 percent growth in aluminum demand in 2012, ahead of the 6.5 percent rate required to meet the Company’s forecast of a doubling in global aluminum demand between 2010 and 2020.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 3.06 percent to $6.33. Natural gas prices moving lower as warmer weather continues to hang around for much of the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. February contracts are $0.082 lower to $2.929 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.15 percent to $22.60. The U.S. dollar eased against the euro, which some might be picking up ahead of news out of Europe over further fiscal unity. The euro is up 0.15 percent to $1.2783.
