Needham & Company reiterates a 'Buy' on Optimer Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: OPTR) price target of $19.00.

Needham analyst says, "Optimer launched Dificid in the U.S. in July 2011 for the treatment of C. difficile infection and announced $10.6M in U.S. sales in 3Q11. The drug was approved in Europe in December 2011, with launch expected by collaborator Astellas in that territory early this year. We expect this to trigger up to €50M in milestone payments in 1H12. Other expected key milestones for the company in 2012 include potential approval/launch in Canada, expansion from the hospital into long-term care facility markets, and initiation of Phase 4 label expansion trials. We believe the stock is undervalued ($430M EV), given the unmet need in C. difficile and superiority over pre-existing agents, including vancomycin and metronidazole."

"We believe Optimer will move forward with Phase 4 label expansion trials in 2012. Management has suggested that it plans to conduct a trial in patients undergoing stem cell transplant to investigate potential for prophylaxis. Trials in certain subpopulations, including pediatric, are also planned."
