Yahoo! (YHOO) May Acquire the Weather Channel, WebMD (WBMD) in Strive for More Content

Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) may be looking to get some content-friendly assets as part of its proposed asset swap with Alibaba Group and Softbank, Bloomberg is reporting Thursday.

The Internet search provider is eying the Weather Channel or WebMD (Nasdaq: WBMD), both big content providers for Internet users.

Bloomberg notes Yahoo! drafted a "wish list" of assets before tapping eBay's (Nasdaq: EBAY) Scott Thompson as its new CEO. The list's formation prior to Thompson means the new exec will have to review and then approve the deals.

Alibaba might acquire the Weather Channel in exchange for some of its assets held by Yahoo!, while Softbank might use WebMD to acquire a 35 percent stake in Yahoo!'s Japan joint venture, according to sources. The Weather Channel is currently owned by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and other private-equity partners.

WebMD currently has a value of $2.2 billion, while the Weather Channel was bought up in 2008 for $3.5 billion by NBC Universal, also owned by Comcast.

Yahoo! shares closed down 0.89 percent to $15.64 Thursday. Shares of WebMED rose 3.5 percent to $39.28 and shares of Comcast closed up 0.9 percent to $24.95.
