Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/04: (UNG) (UP) (XLY) Higher; (FXI) (XLF) Lower
Gainers
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.85 percent to $6.59. Nat gas futures are moving higher on the potential drop in stores from chillier winter weather that swept across most of the Midwest and East, putting temps well below 20 degrees Fahrenheit in some cases. February contracts are up $0.053 to $3.046 per mmBtu on the Comex.
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.61 percent to $22.41. The U.S. dollar is gaining versus the euro following a respectively German bond showing, as investors brace for more auctions from Italy, Spain, and Greece. Germany got bids for about €5.14 billion ($6.7 billion) of 10-year notes, more than the €5 billion sales target. German accepted bids for €4.06 billion, with an average yield of 1.93 percent.
- Consumer Discret Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLY) up 0.86 percent to $39.69. The move in the ETF being led by Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) following December and calendar 2011 U.S. sales numbers, as well as McDonald's (NYSE: MCD), which received some bullish comments from Goldman Sachs today.
- iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.50 percent to $35.44. China stocks turn lower as Mainland trading re-opened Wednesday. Investors are focused on whether China officials will make bigger strides in continuing to boost the economy with further stimulus measures.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 0.30 percent to $13.30. Moving a little higher, but financials are reeling after a decidedly strong open to 2012 Tuesday. Leading the downturn for the ETF is Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) and Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG).
