Notable ETF Movers of the Day 12/19: (XLV) (UUP) Higher; (VXX) (XLF) (EWY) Lower
Gainers
- Health Care Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLV) up 0.51 percent to $33.58. The ETF is being bolstered by Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) and Merck (NYSE: MRK) Monday, as both pharma giants hover around annual highs. Nothing appears to be affecting Pfizer, which has closed higher 12 of the last 17 trading sessions, even as overall markets have fluctuated on European headlines. Shares of Pfizer have moved over 17 percent better since the end of November.
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.13 percent to $22.52. Investors moving to the U.S. dollar following the reported death of eccentric North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. With Jong-il now gone, some are mulling an increase in instability in Asia as a successor is chosen.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 0.67 percent to $38.74. The CBOE VIX is actually in positive territory Monday, despite the ETF still down on the session. Death of Kim Jong-il, as well as comments from ECB President Mario Draghi are weighing on investors' minds, causing some uncertainty in the market. Over the weekend, Draghi admitted that the eurozone could fall apart, indicating the latest measures by the ECB to support Europe's financial markets might have to get a little more creative.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.99 percent to $12.29. Well, it's a bloody mess in the fiancials today, with Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG) showing the only positive action. Cit (NYSE: C) is down 5.6 percent, while Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) is over 3.5 percent lower to a new 52-week low of $5.00. The last time BofA got below $5 per share was in March of 2009.
- iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) down 4.27 percent to $49.56. South Korea, being the closest Asian country to North Korea, is seeing extra market volatility on the death of Kim Jong-il. The South Korean exchange, KRX100, ended 3.15 percent lower Monday.
