Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.99 percent to $41.42. The CBOE VIX is up 8.3 percent Wednesday, as markets are selling on European worries with German Chancellor Angela Merkel once again rejecting measures to increase bailout limits and create eurozone-wide bonds.

At this point, someone needs to check her portfolio.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.40 percent to $22.66. Well, there's not much else out there today, so investors are moving to money to the safe haven dollar. Italian borrowing costs soared, with a recent €3 billion auction of 5-year notes hitting 6.47 percent, the top-end of the expected range. Conversely, the much safer German note drew 0.29 percent, from 0.39 percent in November. Euro is down 1.5 percent to $1.2971.
Receders
  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 2.71 percent to $154.15. As markets continue to tumble, many are selling out of their gold gains in order to make up losses in other segments, and to pay margin calls. The metal fell below $1,600 per ounce for the first time since October, and it is currently $82.1 lower to $1,581.0 per ounce on the Comex.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 0.76 percent to $122.11. Again, U.S. markets waiting for stronger moves in Europe. S&P 500 is off 0.8 percent, Nasdaq down 1.5 percent, Dow off 0.8 percent.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 4.17 percent to $37.00. EIA said that crude stores fell 1.9 million barrels, short of the 2.1 million expected. Further, OPEC ministers met and established a cap of 30 million barrels per day of output for 2012, largely in-line with 2011s output. The news might indicate that OPEC is taking a cautious stance on global growth next year, adding to investor concern.
