Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A): Read Barron's?
In its December 12, 2011 edition, Barron's highlighted its "10 Favorite Stocks For 2012" - all of which have the potential for 15-20% total returns. Common investment themes include healthy dividends and low price/earnings ratios. Barron's 2012 list is highlighted by big blue chips: Berkshire Hathaway, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A) and Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD). Others on the list include: Metlife (NYSE: MET), Sanofi (NYSE: SNY), Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX), Freeport McMoran (NYSE: FCX), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Daimler (DDAIF). With respect to Buffett & Co., Barron's says, "Berkshire is in its best shape ever with a diversified business mix producing profits of about $7,500 per share annually, or $12 billion. Berkshire offers exposure to an improving economy, an upturn in property and casualty reinsurance rates and a rising stock market thanks to its $70-billion-plus equity portfolio, including a new $11-billion investment in IBM (NYSE: IBM)...If Berkshire trades at a modest 1.2 times estimated year-end 2012 book of $112,000, the stock would trade around $135,000, 16% above current levels. Downside seems limited with the buyback in place, buttressed by $31 billion in cash." Barron's acknowledged that its 2011 Top 10 picks underperformed the market, dropping roughly 6.9% compared to a 1.9% decline for the S&P 500 (as of last week). Checkout our "Dogs of the Dow" comment for a strategy that apparently doesn't work but does. Year-to-date, the 2011 Dogs of the Dow strategy has gained roughly 9.5%.
