Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may be looking stop outsourcing the purchase of flash storage, and just make it by themselves.

According to reports Tuesday, Apple is in advanced talks with Israel-based Anobit in a deal valued at between $400 million and $500 million.

Reuters, citing Calcalist, notes that Anobit has developed a chip that enhances flash dive performance through signal processing, and is already incorporated into devices like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod.

For its part, Anobit might also be in financing talks with a "leading Asian flash memory maker," according to reports.

Typically aiming to acquire software firms, not hardware manufacturers, the deal would be outside the norm for Apple. This will also be the largest acquisition for Apple in Israel, should it go through.

Calcalist notes that Apple is interested in Anobit's memory volume and performance enhancement technology. The chips may be able to double memory volume in new iPads and MacBooks, Calcalist concluded.

Apple is 0.6 percent better early Tuesday.
