Notable ETF Movers of the Day 12/08: (VXX) (UNG) (UUP) Higher; (XLF) (GLD) (SPY) Lower

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.79 percent to $43.31. The CBOE VIX is 5.4 percent better Thursday, following comments from European Central Bank President Mario Draghi commented that there may be some substantial downside risks to global growth and no major bond purchasing program was planned.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.32 percent to $7.65. Nat gas futures popped as the EIA reported a 28 billion cubic foot draw on stores for the week ended December 2nd. Analysts surveyed by Dow Jones were looking for a more modest 12 bcf draw. January contracts are $0.051 better to $3.472 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.50 percent to $22.18. The U.S. dollar is making some gains Thursday, as the eurozone is still shaky heading into Friday's EU summit on ECB President Draghi's comments earlier. The euro is 0.7 percent lower to €1.3327 per dollar.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) down 2.85 percent to $12.96. Financials back on lam today, as European pressure continues to weigh. J.P. Morgan (NYSE: JPM) is 3.5 percent lower on the session, following commented from CEO Jamie Dimon that the firm increased its PIIGS lending through the second- and third-quarters to about $15.9 billion as of November 17th.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 1.73 percent to $166.47. Gold slipping again today following Draghi comments. Traders may be cashing in gains in an effort to make up for losses incurred elsewhere. Gold February contracts are $30.6 lower to $1,714.2 per ounce on the Comex.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 1.42 percent to $124.92. U.S. markets are all in negative territory Thursday. The move lower is being led by S&P 500, which is off about 1.4 percent, while the others are down just 1 percent.
