It's been a tough year for some biggies in the hedge fund world.

Just last week John Paulson, who was obviously hoping for a more robust rebound in the U.S. market than actually took place, apologized to investors for the performance of his funds.

But don't tell that to Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn. In the month of November, Greenlight saw a nice 2.6 percent rally, according to Institutional Investor on Thursday. The gain put Greenlight about 4 percent into positive territory for the year.

For some prospective, the Nasdaq fell 2.4 percent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.5 percent, and the Dow Jones gained just 0.7 percent in November.

Greenlight's largest positions included Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), gold (NYSE: GLD), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX).

Einhorn said, in a conference call last month, he entere the third quarter about 23 percent net long, down 10 percent from the second quarter. Institutional Investor said Einhorn reported going from physical gold to the ETF, and getting 35 percent net long through October, ending the month about 33 percent net long.

No disclosure about Einhorn's moves through November have been officially announced.
