Barclays maintains an 'Equalweight' on SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU) price target lowered from $11 to $9.
Barclays analyst says, "Last week, we hosted Sherry Smith, CFO, and Ken Levy, VP of Investor Relations, in meetings with investors in Boston. Management reviewed many of the initiatives it has discussed before, though they went into greater detail about several programs designed to get customers to return to the stores or shop more frequently, including a game that has already gotten traction in several markets. They also spent time on SVU's philosophy about price reductions, which some investors think should be instituted more quickly. SVU wants to lower prices in a way that is perceived as permanent and sustainable by consumers and will get only a minimal response from competitors. This explains why it is reducing prices in key categories - like produce - rather than cutting them across the entire store. Importantly, the company has sufficient data about customer behavior to pass along inflation while still improving its price image."
"We believe SVU has a real plan to improve results and is motivating both employees and vendors to make steady progress. The timing of a turnaround is uncertain, however, and the weak economy makes it difficult for SVU to achieve tangible benefits from its efforts in the near term."
