Barclays on U.S. Health Care Distribution & Technology: Branded Drug Price Survey - October

Barclays analyst, Lawrence C. Marsh, said, "We are issuing our Barclays Capital U.S. branded price survey, after reviewing data from First DataBank on the top 130 branded pharmaceutical products by annual sales. Specifically, based on our selected price inflation study, we highlight that the volume and magnitude of price activity in October was higher than October 2010. Recall for full year 2010, we highlighted that the volume of price activity was lower than 2009, while the magnitude of price activity was higher than 2009. Overall, the magnitude of price activity in 2010 was the highest we have seen over the past ten years."

"In October 2011, we observed 13 price increases, up an average rate of 7.6%. This compares to October 2010 when we saw 9 price increases at an average rate of 5.8% and October 2009 when we saw 17 price increases at an average rate of
6.6%. Meanwhile, we saw 11 price increases at an average rate of 7.2% in October 2008, 10 price increases at an average rate of 6.2% in October 2007, and 6 price increases at an average rate of 4.3% in October 2006. We would note that ex-two large price increases in the month, the average increase would have been 5.7%, roughly in line with last year."

"A number of manufacturers raised prices during the month of October, led by
Genentech, Abbott Labs (NYSE: ABT), and Merck (NYSE: MRK)."

"There was a broad range of products that received a price increase during the month of October. Notably, six of the top fifty highest "ranked" drugs this past month saw price increases, including Rituxan (ranked #20), Herceptin (ranked #32), Procrit (ranked #33), Namenda (ranked #40), Provigil (ranked #45), and Suboxone (ranked #48)."
