Notable ETF Movers of the Day 11/01: (UUP) (VXX) Higher; (FXI) (XLF) (SPY) Lower

Gainers

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 1.27 percent to $21.84. The U.S. dollar moving higher Tuesday, adding to gains Monday as Japan said it would intervene to stem inflation in the yen. The USD/JPY is just about flat on the session, amid upside in the ETF.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 15.66 percent to $46.39. The CBOE VIX is trading 18.5 percent stronger Tuesday, as Greece's Prime Minister George Papandreou called for a referendum.


Receders

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 2.33 percent to $35.22. China's PMI dropped from 51.2 in September to a reading of 50.4 in October, it's lowest mark since early in 2009. China's private-sector PMI actually rose from 49.9 in September to 51.0 for October.

    Some have speculated that China will put interest rate hikes on hold, and data from October hints China's government might delay the move a little while longer.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 4.30 percent to $12.91. Financials still seeing continued weakness Tuesday as MF Global (NYSE: MF) filed for bankruptcy Monday, and investors have concerns over institutions exposure to the brokerage. The move is being led by Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C), which is 7.2 percent lower on the session.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 2.65 percent to $122.18. U.S. markets are lower on Greek PM Papandreou news. With markets fluctuating widly on European debt concerns over the last several months, Papandreou's move is spiking more volatility. Should votes come in with most at 'no,' then the euro zone will be back to square one, and Greece will be facing even more fiscal challenges to meet requirements for additional funds. The S&P is down the most on the day, off about 2.5 percent to 1,221.66.
