Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/28: (UNG) (TAN) (EWZ) Higher; (FXI) (EWZ) (SMH) Lower

Gainers

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 3.23 percent to $8.92. Nat gas trading a little irrational Friday, following reports of an increase in gas stores above and beyond what analysts were expecting last week. One catalyst might be colder weather rolling in, with potential snow expected in parts of the Northeast over the weekend. Nat gas December contracts are $0.132 higher to $3.896 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 2.14 percent to $3.82. The ETF is being led higher by GT Advanced Technologies (Nasdaq: GTAT) is up over 4.4 percent Friday, after receiving a polysilicon order valued at $47.7 million.

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) up 0.28 percent to $63.74. Brazil stocks moving higher on European news, and the central bank cutting its benchmark Selic interest rate by 0.5 percent Thursday, according to release minutes from its October interest-rate meeting. Brazil's Bovespa is 3.7 percent higher Friday.


Receders

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.51 percent to $37.76. Investors may be taking a little off the table Friday, following a strong week in Shanghai and Hong Kong trading. Chinese markets were bolstered by signals of eased monetary policy by the government, as well as positive economic data from the U.S. and a resolution to the European debt crisis.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.77 percent to $35.93. The crude ETF may be doing the same thing as China stocks following a stong week that saw crude prices rise over 7 percent and the ETF make a similar move. Currently, crude December contracts are $1.11 lower to $92.85 per barrel on the Comex.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 0.22 percent to $32.34. The move being led by Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), which is 1.9 percent lower Friday, following rival AMD's (NYSE: AMD) quarterly earnings report. With its report, TI lowered its outlook for the fourth-quarter, citing acquisition-related costs. AMD wasn't nearly as colorful, simply saying fourth-quarter revs would be down 2 percent to up 3 percent sequentially. AMD's CFO commented that, "since our preliminary results announcement in September 2011, we saw unanticipated sales strength in the Channel through the end of the quarter." AMD is higher on Fridays session.
