End of the Day: Dow Jones up 340 to 12,208.55; Nasdaq up 88 to 2,738.63; S&P 500 up 43 to 1,284.59
The following is a brief summary of events moving markets today:
- HP's retake: Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) decided not to divest or sell its Personal Systems Group (PSG) following evaluation. With CEO Meg Whitman at the helm, the move eradicates the some of the last balls former CEO Leo Apotheker set rolling.
H-P commented, "The strategic review involved subject matter experts from across the businesses and functions. The data-driven evaluation revealed the depth of the integration that has occurred across key operations such as supply chain, IT and procurement. It also detailed the significant extent to which PSG contributes to HP’s solutions portfolio and overall brand value. Finally, it also showed that the cost to recreate these in a standalone company outweighed any benefits of separation."
- This time, its for real: EU leaders came to a conclusion about the debt crisis in Europe after hours of deliberation. The conclusion? "Let's end this thing," German Chancellor Angela Merkel (could've) said, as she put on a classic pair of Ray-Ban's, stamped out a cigarette with her heel, and pushed forward through the parliamentary door, aids in tow.
Some detail: "European leaders reached a deal with private banks that will result in a voluntary 50 percent haircut on Greek debt. In addition, the regions bailout vehicle, or European Financial Stability Facility, has been increased "four-or five-fold" which suggests it could provide guarantees of up to €1 trillion.
- You < Exxon: It hasn't been officially announced, but the globe may collective *sigh* as Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) reported a 41 percent increase in third-quarter net income for $10.33 billion, though, for its part, costs also increased 30 percent. Click here for a lil' more color.
- Go, Growth, GO!: U.S. GDP expanded by 2.5 percent in the third-quarter, besting expectations for a 2.3 percent increase. The economy grew at just 1.3 percent in the second quarter.
