Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/26: (QQQ) (SMH) (OIH) Higher; (XLU) (FXI) (VXX) LOwer
Gainers
- PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQ) up 1.47 percent to $52.59. The Nasdaq is catching a nice bounce today, as Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) made a rip higher just after 10am today. Apple ripped 1.6 percent higher into positive territory, effectively erasing the dip created after Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO.
- Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.86 percent to $28.42. Stocks rebounding today following Bernanke's Jackson Hole speech. The semiconductor ETF is being led by Altera Corp. (Nasdaq: ALTR), which is 3.1 percent stronger on the session.
- Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) up 2.50% percent to $125.17. Oil service companies possibly making a gain today, possibly due in part to hurricane Irene, as people buy more fuel to prepare for landfall. October contracts are up $0.25 to $85.55 per barrel on the Comex.
- Utilities Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLU) down 0.54 percent to $32.87. Following a nice move earlier in the week in the wake of the earthquake that hit Virginia, utilities are lower today as hurricane Irene looms over the East Coast, potentially causing billions in damage.
- iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 0.63 percent to $36.40. China ended lower following the announcement of Shaanxi Coal Industry looking to do a $2.7 billion IPO, which could be the largest in China this year. Reuters notes the Shanghai Composite fell 0.1 percent by is up 3.1 percent on the week on prospects the government will ease tightening measures.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.00 percent to $41.35. The CBOE VIX is up about 8.7 percent as markets shift from negative to positive in the wake of Jackson Hole.
