Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/05: (VXX) (GLD) (FXY) Higher; (SPY) (UNG) (XLF) Lower

- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 11.08 percent to $32.07. The CBOE VIX is heading higher today, from a solid move yesterday, as growth fears have hit the market. Today, nonfarm payrolls came in better than expected, 117K versus 85K consensus, and earnings moved up 0.4 percent in July. Fears that Italy, Europe's third largest economy, might need a bailout continue to weigh, as it's borrowing costs have skyrocketed.
- SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.45 percent to $161.36. Taking a long-term approach to the debt crisis, investors and traders are buying gold on any dips, adding unusual volatility to the normally steadfast metal. Gold hit a record of $1,684.90 per ounce this week, as fears continued to weigh following the U.S. debt limit resolution Tuesday, which many see as only a temporary fix. The metal is up $3.3 to $1,662.3 on the Comex this afternoon.
- CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE: FXY) up 0.81 percent to $125.71. Investors turning to the yen as an alternative safe haven bet against the euro, as concerns still linger the region. Just yesterday, Allied Irish (NSE: AIB) announced its intention to delist from the NYSE, a move that wouldn't have received a room full of laughter if mentioned just a few years ago.

- SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 2.54 percent to $117.21, PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQ) down 2.79 percent to $52.66, and SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) down 1.61 percent to $111.90. U.S. markets fell into red this morning not that long after the open, amid strong jobs numbers. The move continues from yesterday, when the Dow Jones recorded it's ninth largest decline in terms of overall volume.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.10 percent to $9.96. Nat gas is surprisingly flat amid market fears today. Yesterday, the EIA reported nat gas stores increased 44 billion cubic feet, larger than the 32 and 41 billion cubic feet expected on the Street.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 3.14 percent to $13.26. Being led by financial giants Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) and Citigroup (NYSE: C) today, financials are on the decline as fears the U.S. will receive a ratings downgrade continue. BofA is nearly eight percent lower on the session, to a 52-week low of $8.10, as it was lowered at Wells Fargo from Outperform to Market Perform, its valuation range cut from $14 to $15 to a range of $9.50 to $11.50. Citi fell as much as 8.6 percent to its 52-week low of $31.81 (post-split).
