Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/26: (VXX) (SMH) (FXE) Higher; (UNG) (XLI) (XME) Lower

Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.02 percent to $21.74. The CBOE VIX is up over 4 percent on the session today, as lawmakers struggle to find common ground on the debt ceiling. Markets don't seem to care too much however, the Nasdaq currently in the green, with others down, but not too much.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.24 percent to $33.88. Led by Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), which is 1.5 percent higher on the session, following a second-quarter earnings beat after the market closed yesterday.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.93 percent to $144.53. Weakness in the U.S. dollar continues today, as debt is still in focus. The Euro/USD is 0.9 percent better to €1.4505.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.00 percent to $10.88. Nat gas futures ticking lower as forecast are calling for a little cooling across the Midwest and into the East. September contracts are trading $0.052 lower to $4.303 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • Industrial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLI) down 1.58 percent to $36.23. Both 3M (NYSE: MMM) and UPS (NYSE: UPS) are leading the ETF lower today following earnings reports from both companies that filed to spur investors. 3M is down 4.4 percent on the session, while UPS is 4.8 percent lower.

  • SPDR S&P Metals & Mining (NYSE: XME) down 2.02 percent to $69.87. Though gold prices are lower, the stock may be seeing some extra pressure from Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR) which is down 3.8 percent on the session ahead of its earnings report on August 4th.
